Advertisements last less than a minute, sometimes only seconds, yet they manage to tell a story, mostly without words, packing in so much information. I admire good ones for this reason. Recently I worked on a commercial as a choreographer and here is the result. I love it.
I hope you like it, too. It's rather quirky.
This was a special job where I learned a hell of a lot in a short time.
The Indian film world is a very well oiled machine! I was very lucky to work with the very successful film production company, Nirvana Films. Nirvana Film’s founder and the principle director, Prakash Varma, directed the commercial. Satchith Paulose was the Director of Photography and he is a master of his craft! I was very fortunate to work with him, too.
Prakash is a true artist, and from the beginning I felt a connection. During our first e- meeting, he had explained the concept very clearly, giving me a very solid base to work from. This was a huge help when I did the choreographic research in London.
The rehearsals in Mumbai went well. I had one day to workshop and lay out the choreography with 41 artists of various age and ability. It was great to see some familiar faces from my Bangalore days.
Shoot day was long, usually they are. The shoot was at an old and disused grand hotel in Mumbai. When I turned up at the set, almost everyone who worked on the set looked sleep deprived! I was jet lagged but very awake with nervous energy!
It was one of the most rewarding days. The choreographer's job is very important in situations where stories are told through movement. It was fun and challenging. I love working in the film world.
Most of the cast members were very established artists! Some are directors with theatre companies, some are dance artists, and some are great actors already working in theatre and in films.
I loved my time with all the artists. There was a warmth between us all.
And I especially love this 'behind the scenes' footage of the shoot! ❤️❤️❤️
